Link: Barney Oldfield, Legendary Speed King

Barney Oldfield was inducted into the Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.  He brought racing to the common man and he drove at speeds almost unheard of at the time. His rebel ways brought him scorn from race organizers and rich car owners. He was a pioneer and one of the fathers of modern racing.  This link has excerpts from a book about Barney and includes pictures.

Have you ever dreamed about doing something thrilling for SO long, that when you finally realized the dream it seemed somehow surreal? That’s how I felt as I sat on pre-grid last weekend at the world famous Road Atlanta Race Course. I closed the visor of my race helmet and put my head back against the head rest. I retreated inside my helmet in that moment and for a brief time the rest of the world no longer existed.
